The Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has taken significant steps towards addressing the prevalence of kidney disease in the Bade Emirate of the state.
The governor took the giant step when he instructed the Biomedical Science Research and Training Center at Yobe State University, in collaboration with the office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Science, Research, and Innovation, Dr. Mahmoud Bukar Maina, to conduct fresh research on the causes of kidney disease and related ailments in the Gashu’a Bade Local Government Area and its surrounding areas.
The announcement was made during a visit to the Emir of Bade, His Royal Highness Mai Abubakar Suleiman, at his palace in Gashua. The delegation, led by the State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Mohammed Lawan Gana included a group of international scientists from esteemed institutions worldwide who are dedicated to advancing medical research and knowledge.
Dr. Mahmoud Bukar Maina, who is the Special Adviser to the Governor on Science, Research, and Innovation, and also doubles as the Director of the Biomedical Research Training Center, revealed that experts from the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Algeria, Senegal, and Ghana are part of the research team.
Their mission is to delve deeper into the root causes of kidney disease and develop sustainable solutions.
Dr. Maina highlighted previous collaborations with prestigious research institutes in the UK while emphasising the commitment to addressing local health challenges through scientific research.
Professor Maimuna Waziri, the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Gashua, pledged the university’s support in collaborating with the research team to uncover the underlying causes of kidney disease in Gashua and its environs. She acknowledged the persistent challenges faced in understanding and combating this health issue.
Responding, the Emir of Bade, His Royal Highness Mai Abubakar Suleiman, expressed gratitude for the government’s proactive approach in tackling the longstanding issue of kidney disease in the region. He assured the research team of his full support and cooperation in their endeavors.
In their separate remarks, the Deputy Speaker of the Yobe State House of Assembly, Hon. Ya’u Usman Dachia, and the Chief Medical Director of Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Baba Goni Waru, including Dr. Yaw Aniweh from a university in Ghana all affirmed their readiness to assist and contribute to the research efforts aimed at addressing kidney disease in the area and the state as a whole.
